Lots of dogs can feel anxious or nervous due to a multitude of factors. So how can we help them? Build the relationship between you and your dog by creating an unwavering trust. If your dog can have absolute trust and confidence in you, then they won’t have to worry about different situations they are in. They can trust that you will keep them safe and handle anything that comes your way. Training is futile unless you establish a strong relationship with your dog. Above all, make it positive and fun! Now, you will never see me inside a dog park, BUT you most definitely will see me training outside of one. I hate dog parks just as much as the next trainer for a multitude of reasons (dog fights and illnesses are inevitable here) but they offer one of the best environments to build engagement and work around distractions. With all the sights, sounds, and smells a dog park offers, you can use the outside area to teach neutrality at a safe distance. THAT is what socialization is. Structure = Reliability: With reliability comes more freedom. To me, there are few things better than seeing a dog have the freedom to run through an open field, pick up as many sticks as they can find, and just be a dog.
